The Samy Group – Company Overview

The Samy Group is a family of companies that currently operates or directly manages 73 convenience stores and forecourts across the UK. Established in 2009, the original business—Samy Limited—has grown in conjunction with its Group subsidiaries to become one of the UK’s leading independent operators in the convenience retail and forecourt sector.

As a proudly independent operator, Samy is not a corporate retailer. We believe our independence is a significant strength, enabling us to respond swiftly and effectively to the needs of our customers and local markets. Our stores and forecourts operate under a variety of fascias and brands, carefully selected to align with the specific characteristics of the communities they serve. This flexibility and market sensitivity underpin our competitive edge.

Within our portfolio, we operate under several leading convenience fascias, including Co-operative, Morrisons Daily, Budgens, SPAR, Londis, and Premier. Our geographical reach is extensive, with operations spanning from Middlesbrough to Great Yarmouth and from Birmingham to Peterborough. While we are open to opportunities nationwide, our current focus is on strengthening our presence in existing operational regions.

Our growth strategy is built on delivering strong performance from each acquisition or conversion, driving both retail and fuel sales. Over the next three years, we aim to expand our network to approximately 100 stores within our current operational footprint.

Company History and Growth

Although Samy Limited was founded in 2009, our significant growth phase began in 2013. Prior to that, the business concentrated on building a strong reputation for customer service and quality as a commission forecourt operator. This foundation enabled us to grow to 16 sites across the Cambridge and Colchester areas.

A major milestone was achieved in 2012 with the launch of our first independently operated forecourt store at Tudor Lodge Service Station in Middlesbrough. The site quickly became a success, with weekly fuel sales increasing by 260% and shop sales rising by 280%, driven by strategic investment in people and retail standards.

In 2018, buoyed by our continued growth and operational strength, we undertook our first corporate acquisitions. We acquired and converted two former Central England Co-operative stores in Leicester and Birmingham to the Budgens fascia, both of which have delivered strong sales performance.

In 2019, we completed a complex acquisition and integration of 15 operating stores from Sainsbury’s Stores Ltd, converting them to Budgens. These stores, primarily located in Yorkshire and the North East, were acquired entirely through business equity. Staff were transferred under TUPE regulations and successfully integrated into our team.

These strategic acquisitions significantly strengthened our operational capabilities and laid a solid foundation for continued growth over the past few years. Subsequent acquisitions have included trading assets from major operators such as Ascona, Tesco, Mid-counties Co-operative, and Central England Co-operative.

We currently employ over 250 colleagues, and the Group’s annual turnover exceeds £100 million.
